Prayer is nothing more than just talking to God. The important thing is using your heart and your imagination when talking to God. Try to imagine God so vividly in your mind that He is right there in the Spirit, and can not only hear you when you speak, but that He also understand the depths of your soul. He understands what you are feeling as you are talking to Him. So when you talk to Him just believe that He is there and that He loves you. Do not entertain thoughts that will make Him go away. Do not try to belittle yourself before Him and say, “Why should He come and listen to me? I am a nobody.” Resist all these negative thoughts and imagine a God that loves you so much and is actually looking forward to listening to you and becoming your friend. If negative thoughts, like shame and reproaches won’t go away but instead they overcome you, then go straight to the heart of your problem. Don’t wait another second to say or cry out to Him exactly how you are feeling. Tell Him, “Jesus, cleanse me, help me! Jesus save me from all these shame and reproaches! Please forgive me. I repent from all of my sins and shame to you. Please forgive me and take all this shame away from me. Please take all these bad feelings away from me. You are my God! You are my King! I cry to You! Please save me!” Talk to Him from your heart. Don’t make prayer complicated with Him. The most important thing with Him is your heart. The Bible states that we will find Him if we come to Him with all of our heart. {Jeremiah 29:13} So whatever you feel in your heart, tell Him about it. Do you feel bad, feel ashamed and angry? Whatever you are feeling translate this to words and tell Jesus.
Don’t make prayer hard on yourself by trying to be someone else to God. Don’t make God a stranger in your life. Understand this very thought: He knows you. There is nothing you can hide from Him. He knows everything about you. Everything. From the time you were born to until right now. But understand another thought that is very true as well: He loves you. Jesus loves you and died for your sins. He gave His life for you so that you can be set free from the darkness and the evil power of this world. Your talking to Him is your road to happiness. Your talking to Him is your road to salvation. Every spirit in this world is going to work very hard to try to make you to stop talking to Him, because He is the only one that is powerful enough to defeat them. God is their enemy so tap into Him. Your goal is to fight against every attempt on their part to try and stop you. It doesn’t matter if it feels like it’s you who is feeling unworthy of Him or unloved by Him. Treat every feeling that keeps you from talking to God as your number one enemy. If you know the truth that Jesus Christ died for your sins because He loves you, then all these negative feelings are lies. Do not listen to them. The devil works through our minds to bring these feelings to come against us. Thoughts are spirits. You cannot handle them and you cannot touch them. You can only end up believing them and feeling them. What the enemy will say to you will feel real. It will not be any different than your own thoughts and feelings unless you’ve spent enough time in the presence of God and He shows you exactly what the enemy is doing. Negative feelings are thoughts from the enemy. Talk to God about these thoughts and ask for deliverance. Don’t analyze it and try to justify yourself. If these thoughts are keeping you from talking to the Lord then they are your enemy. You need to hand them to the Lord by telling Him exactly what is going on with yourself.
If you find yourself depressed and numb because of all these negative feelings and find yourself speechless and don’t know what to say to the Lord anymore, don’t stop and walk away. Take your Bible and find a comfortable place to read it, whether in your couch or in your bed. Like I said, don’t make prayer hard. Be as comfortable as you can possibly be. Go under the covers if you like and just read your Bible. I usually like to read in Psalms whenever I feel this way but whatever you feel in your heart just open the Bible and start reading. I don’t know where you are in your walk with God but I feel that I need to keep encouraging you. Whoever you are if you are seeking after God right now and want Him in your life, please talk to Him about it. I started out with another thought in mind for this article, but I feel in my spirit to take this path that the Lord has placed in my heart.
As you read the Bible talk to the Lord in your spirit. Reach out to Him with your spirit and ask Him to save you, to come to you and save you. You might think, “but I’m already saved.” If you’re unhappy you need saving. Even if you’ve been baptized or have even received the Spirit of God, if you’re still miserable like this when you try to pray, then you need saving. You need Him to come and save you from all these evil spirits that are keeping you from letting go of all your negative thoughts. If you are depressed and you don’t have the mind nor the energy to keep talking to Him, then He must come and deliver you. He has to come and save you. If you don’t give up on Him I can promise you this, you will be saved. One of these days all these evil and wicked thoughts that are making you feel defeated and wretched in your life are going to flee. Jesus Christ is going to fill you with Himself that these thoughts will no longer have the power to overcome you. One of these days you will have the power of Christ in you to be able to command these thoughts away from your soul and from your spirit. You will be set free. In the meantime you need to wait on the Lord and spend time in His presence until you feel stronger in your soul to face your day everyday.
You will fall asleep as you read your Bible. This is natural especially if you’re still not in a habit of reading your Bible, and also if you’ve just been crying out to the Lord about your depression and your bad feelings. You just exerted yourself and depleted your spiritual energy. You will fall asleep. Welcome this as a respite. This is part of the Lord’s comfort. When you wake up, continue reading. Likely you will fall asleep again. Like I said if you’re not used to reading the Bible all the time and you’re not in a habit of doing this you will fall asleep. You might have to go through this waking up, reading, falling asleep again, maybe four to six times until you finally are able to keep reading longer and longer without dozing off so quickly. In the process love Jesus. Tell Him you need Him and want Him in your life. Talk to Him about whatever comes in your heart. Don’t make Him a stranger who doesn’t know you. Make Him a friend that has known you all these years that you are finally acknowledging and you feel good about. Remember He loves you and He did not come to this world to condemn us. He came because He wants to save us. The most important process of saving us is talking to Him and having a relationship with Him. This is crucial to Him. Talking to Him is your power. He alone can save you. Don’t ever stop talking to Him.
Reading and meditating on the word of the Lord and at the same time talking to the Lord in your soul and in your mind is prayer. So many people don’t know this. They think they must be talking out loud in order to be heard by God or to feel like they have prayed. Just to communicate to God your thoughts or desire of Him is prayer. To feel after Him with your heart and your emotions, and convey to Him the words you are feeling in your heart, whether in whispers or in your mind, these are prayers to Him. To tell Him He means so much to you and how much you need Him in your life is a prayer. You don’t need to go into a lengthy discourse with Him to have Him hear you and bless your life. To be able to pour your heart and soul to Him is a goal accomplished in prayer. When your heart has been lightened, when your spirit has been lightened, when you feel happier in your soul, then you have prayed.
The key to prayer is in being yourself and coming to Him with all of your heart. To be able to convey to the Lord your desires, whether in whispers or in your thoughts (with your whole heart talking to Him), then you’ve overcome. You have done a marvelous thing. You have prayed.
My next blog post will be part II of this thought…
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. {Jeremiah 29:13}
I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. {Psalm 3:4}
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. {Philippians 4:6}
Prayer
