Facing Tomorrow

Click Here to Listen

Facing tomorrow can be a very scary thing to a lot of us. It can even debilitate us to a point where we wake up anxious all the time. Some take anxiety pills because of it. The thought of the unknown can paralyze us. We imagine things going wrong. We could lose our job, lose a loved-one, or end up with a terminal illness, on and on and on. We imagine all kinds of crazy things that can happen in our lives and I understand that completely, because really who knows what will happen tomorrow? No one does. There are so many stories out there about people going through traumatic events that you can’t help but start to wonder if it’ll happen to you too. I’ve read stories of people that were happily planning for their future, the next thing you know they’re in a hospital because of an accident and their life now is completely changed. The things they thought they were going to do in the future have now all changed. Anything can happen, anything, so you start wanting to prepare for it. But in the process of wanting to prepare for it, we could end up a basket case. We could end up anxious and nervous all the time because we start to think of the “ifs” scenarios. “What if, this happens?” And then, “What if that happens?” We end up scaring ourselves to death about the future. We end up with a nervous breakdown everyday. Who wants to live that way? No one I’m sure.

Thank the Lord though, because there is an easy fix to all of these fears we go through. All we need to do is get into the habit of talking to God – sharing with Him everything we worry about. It’s really that simple. Once you get this principle down of talking to the Lord about everything you’re concerned and worried about and planning for, peace of mind will begin to enter into your life. You will begin to find peace and joy in the process of living instead of being afraid of it. The solution is you must simply get into the habit of talking to God. Start sharing with Him your fears and your anxieties, and start placing these worries in His hands. When you do, before long He will get you to realize that even though you might not have the control of the events that could transpire in your life, He does. He can do anything remember? He is still the God of all creation. He still reigns. His word assures us:

Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure. {Isaiah 46:10}

That means He is still in control of the whole entire world. He is in control and there is nothing that He cannot take care of or fix for us. Jesus told us to stop worrying about the future. He tells us Himself,

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” {Matthew 6:34}

Stop worrying about tomorrow. Just stop worrying about it. Stop thinking about what could go wrong and start thinking about what could go right instead. Since the Lord is in control we can start telling Him and asking Him to make things wonderful for us. Stop putting yourself into a fright of what could go wrong. You can’t do anything about it anyway, so you might as well enjoy life in the process and place your trust and your life into God’s hands. Even if things do go wrong, the Lord can do anything. He can fix anything for us. Whatever it is that can go wrong, He can take care of it. the Bible tells us:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. {Romans 8:28}

So stop worrying because worrying will rob you of your joy today and peace of mind. Worrying will get us nowhere. Whereas believing in God and trusting in Him will bring us to a future that is victorious and overcoming – a life that is happy and fulfilling. This is what He promised after all. He told us,

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” {John 16:33}

He said, “Be of good cheer!” That means He wants us to be happy. He doesn’t want us to be upset about life. Every time I get to worrying about what will happen and start to imagine dreadful things, I just sing this wonderful song written by Ira Stanphill: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow. It has a beautiful way of reminding me who is in control and what I need to do.

I don’t know about tomorrow;
I just live from day to day.
I don’t borrow from it’s sunshine
For it’s skies may turn to grey.

I don’t worry o’er the future,
For I know what Jesus said.
And today I’ll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

Many things about tomorrow
I don’t seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow
And I know He holds my hand.

So if God is in control and He works everything out for our good, what is there to worry about? We’ve got to learn to stop worrying and being afraid of tomorrow. We’ve got to have faith in Him. We’ve got to start getting into the habit of talking to Him and committing every desire and worry to Him. The Lord is faithful. He will never leave us nor forsake us. We just have to learn to trust in Him.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. {Proverbs 3:5-6}

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. {Philippians 4:6}

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. {Proverbs 16:3}

Prayer

Father, thank You for this beautiful song You’ve given Ira to share with us today. Even after all these years, it continues to bless and bring comfort to many of those that place their hope and trust in You.

Father, You are ever so faithful and ever so true. You do not lie. There is nothing too hard with You, so that whatever You promise me You are able to bring to pass in my life. You told me in Your word to abide in You daily, because without You I cannot do anything. This is why this is so important to always talk to You because in talking to You I will find peace and joy in this life. I don’t have to be overwhelmed by the fears of tomorrow but instead I can overcome them and live a victorious life everyday.

I pray for more desire to spend time with You, Father, to talk to You. Give me more love for You and more faith in You. Father, I pray and ask for all of these things in Your wonderful and precious name, Jesus. Thank You, Father. Amen.
