There truly is a love that satisfies and fulfills. A love that goes down deep within your soul and fills you through and through. You don’t feel the need or long for anyone else to validate you in this life. You are accepted, you are loved, and you are completely made whole. Yes, I am talking about the love of God.
The problem with a lot of us is that we don’t wait long enough for Him to fill us through and through. We are satisfied with whatever little presence we feel from Him and we move on. Then when there’s no one else out there, a friend, a lover, or the pursuit of a career to bring our devotion to, we remember the Lord. We wait until there’s no one else out there to fill us to seek after the Lord for love. I will say this again and again to myself for the rest of my life and I will say it here now: Nothing, absolutely nothing in this life can satisfy like Jesus can – nothing. No love of a parent, a spouse, a child, an animal, a career, material things or anything you can name, can ever go into the deepest part of our being except the Spirit of God. Only God’s Spirit can ever fill the longings of our soul. It is futile to search for a love that satisfies from anyone else or from anything else except from God.
The key in finding and receiving God’s love is in talking to Him and never, ever stop communicating with Him. The more we talk to Him the more we will have Him. The more we set our affections toward Him the more He will set His affections toward us. This is what I have experienced again and again in my life and continue to experience.
I have spent over half of my life talking to the Lord. I started talking to the Lord when I was seventeen years old. I’ve learned in the process that man, things, and the pursuit of dreams outside of God can never bring true fulfillment and satisfaction the way Jesus can. He has come through to my soul today like I’ve never experienced Him before. He fills the longings of my soul like no one else has. His love fills me that I don’t worry about what I have, who loves or cares for me, and what will happen to me in the end. I have every assurance in my heart that He will meet me in the end. He will be there to welcome me when my life is over. I not only feel whole and very loved inside, I have peace too. It is a true feeling of love and peace I feel deep within my soul. I can never thank God enough for it. I love Him so much. He said in His word:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” {Matthew 11:28-29}
He said to learn of Him, to know Him, and to seek after Him. When we do we will find Him and find His rest. He said that we will find Him if we seek after Him with all of our hearts. The secret ingredient is: with all of our hearts. Unless you talk to Him and come to Him with all of your heart, you will fail in knowing who He is and in receiving Him.
“And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.” {Jeremiah 29:13}
The problem is we give up too easily on the Lord whenever we try to seek after Him. We seek instead for a quick fix. We go to church to feel the presence of God, to sing His songs, hear the preacher preach, then we go home and stop seeking for Him more. We get lazy. Then when the Spirit of God nudges us to spend more time communing with Him we say to ourselves, “I’ve already gone to church today. I don’t need to do anymore.” You feel a little happy in your spirit and so you don’t feel the need to talk to the Lord anymore.
But the truth is we will never come to know Jesus Christ personally in the mighty way He desires for us to know Him by just going to church, singing His songs and listening to the preaching. We have to talk to Him. Unless we spent that time in church talking to the Lord, we will never come to know who He is. And the sad, sad part about this is, there is no knowing God except by talking to Him.
Let me paint a scenario for you: A man and a woman meet and fall in love. In the process of marriage they stop talking to each other and learning about each other. Do you think this marriage will last if they continue to go on this path? No. I don’t think so. They might continue to be “married” but it doesn’t mean they are truly married. So it is with our relationship with the Lord. If we don’t talk to Him, we won’t know Him. And if we don’t know Him we will never fully receive that love that fulfills, the love that only He can give and satisfy us with.
It is possible to be in a relationship and not know each other because you are too busy, or too tired, or too distracted to spend time with each other. Before the world you may present yourself as a happy couple, content and happy being married. Yet you don’t know each other. If you would be honest with yourself, your spouse doesn’t know you well enough as they should. A marriage should be knowing each other, soul and spirit. Your heart and soul belong to your spouse and theirs to you. You have no secrets, you have no desire to, and all you want to be is with each other all the time. That is a true loving marriage. That’s really how marriage should be. The Bible states, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” {Genesis 2:24} The husband and the wife become not only one flesh, but one heart and soul, completely belonging to each other without any bounds. This is intentional and designed by God because this is how God wants us to be with Him in the spirit. We cleave to Him heart and soul, mind and spirit, that nothing can separate us from His love.
But often we settle. We settle in our understanding of God and in our knowledge of God. We don’t spend enough time knocking at His door to know who He is. And when His Spirit knocks at our door we don’t even know He’s there. We are too caught up with our to-do-list in this world that we are too busy to hear Him.
Is it any wonder we are so unhappy? We look and look for the right spouse or the right friend or the right environment or the right job. We look and look and search and search and yet the answer is in our hearts all along, in our soul, in our very being. The Bible states, “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.” {Proverbs 20:27} You don’t need to go to church to talk to the Lord. You don’t need to go to some special mountain to be heard by God. God said there is no place on this earth we can hide from Him.
“Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.” {Jeremiah 23:24}
Where you are, God is. So speak to Him, talk to Him and know who He is. Seek after Him with all of your heart. I guarantee you that He will come to you and will fill you of Himself like nothing and no one else can in this life. Everything you’ve ever dreamed of or longed for in a relationship you will find in Jesus. Every desire you have for love, for acceptance, and for fulfillment He will give to you. He will fill your life with so much meaning and so much truth that you will not worry about who loves you or how much money you have. You will not need or look for validation from anyone else or from anything else in this life when your heart is full of Jesus. The key thing is in never ever giving up talking to Him and coming to Him with all of your heart.
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.” {Matthew 7:7-8}
