Finding worth in this life is so important. What gives us meaning and what gives us value helps us find our purpose in living. More and more in our day and age we are bombarded with computers, technology, television, movies and entertainment. The need to be filled inside is so important in people’s lives. So many people are needing more and more validation in life. Many blogs and life coaches are talking about it. They are all trying to encourage us to reach for our highest potential. Not to settle for our everyday job that makes us miserable and unhappy, but to go out there and pursue our dreams and find our meaning and worth. People everywhere are looking for their meaning and searching for their worth. Why is that?
Not so long ago being in tune to spiritual things and connecting with God was all people wanted to do, because there was nothing else to entertain them. When dusk settled and the chores were done there were only people, animals and God. There were no iPhones, movies, television or the Internet. They went out into the world and were satisfied with just talking to God and enjoying the people and nature around them. To them it was good to be alive. It was a gift from God that they treasured and appreciated very much. I believe they were happier. Things have changed. God is still there. Animals and nature are still all around us and yet, these days we are feeling emptier and emptier. It seems to me just being alive is not enough anymore. To see the sun shining and to hear the birds singing doesn’t even give us joy anymore. We don’t even know when they’re singing. We’ve looked to our technology and our social media to find validation and give us worth. We don’t look to God and nature anymore. We’ve become a really unhappy generation.
That’s why I feel like it’s time for us to start going back to the basics of life. Go back to who really gives us worth – God. When you’re feeling sad and empty and can’t seem to place your finger on what is making you unhappy, talk to the Lord. Find Him. Seek Him. Find your true purpose in Him again. He created everything in this life for us to enjoy and to give us value and meaning. Most of all He gave Himself. His presence is everywhere in the world, if we would only sit still and turn off every technology that is vying for our attention, and enjoy what He has to offer instead. Yes, families are important too. Relationships, friendships, they all play an integral part of our self-worth and value systems. We should go out and positively interact with one another. But at the end of the day when that still isn’t enough, and you find yourself friendless and alone, find Jesus. Find the Lord, because He gives worth.
Again and again when I find myself getting sucked into the “liking” game in social media, and getting disappointed that people didn’t like this or didn’t like that, I find that it’s time for me to get a dose of God’s reality check. We weren’t created to garner likes on social media and to seek and find the approval of random people. We weren’t created to just accumulate earthly stuff that doesn’t satisfy, and to envy and covet what others have and pine for things we don’t have. We were created to love God, to find our meaning in Him and to find our worth in Him. We were created to just enjoy life and be thankful for the fact alone that we’re alive. We shouldn’t sit in front of the computer all day long and waste all the energy and life God has given us. We need to enjoy the things He’s created in nature: the trees, the birds, the sun, the wind, the rain, the flowers, the seasons that come and go. The real thing! To enjoy life for itself because this is the day that the Lord has made I will rejoice and be glad in it, the psalmist reminds us. {Psalm 118:24}
In the end, the only thing that matters is Jesus Christ. No one else created us and gave His life at the cross for us, so that we can live an abundant life on this earth and be with Him for eternity. No one else made us. No one else breathed life into us except God. Everything in this life is going to pass away – the Internet, the movies, the television, the money, the job, the house, the car, even the people that give us meaning. Everything! Nothing is going to last. Only God will last. We’re going to return to Him. He’s the only one that matters in the end.
So when you’re finding yourself searching for validation and worth, and looking for others to give you meaning and can’t find it, find it in Jesus. Find it with the Lord and talk to Him about your hopes and dreams and desires. Tell Him what’s disappointing you and making you unhappy in this life. Tell Him what you want and find your joy in Him. And when you do, God’s love will be there. He is faithful. He will be there. He will love us and will fill us and give us happiness. He alone will give us true worth.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. {Matthew 6:33}
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but My words shall not pass away. {Matthew 24:35}
But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. {Philippians 4:19}
A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. {Psalm 23:1}
For He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. {Psalm 107:9}
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. {Matthew 5:6}
The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek Him: your heart shall live for ever. {Psalm 22:26}
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I love You. I thank You with all of my heart that Your love is true for me because Your love never changes, and You remain the same yesterday, today and forever.
I pray Father for Your continued grace and mercy upon me today. Help me to love You again and find myself in Your presence once again. Help me to remember that in You I will find my worth. When nothing else in this life is giving me worth and value, I will find it in You because great is Your love for me. Help me not to wait until my heart is empty and thirsting, but help me to always come to You and make time to talk and commune with You everyday. I ask for all of these things Father, in Your most wonderful and sweet name, Jesus. Thank You, Father. Amen.
