And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. {1 John 2:17}
How do you know when you are in the will of God or are walking in the path He desires for you to walk in? You know because you hear His voice and you obey what He tells you to do.
The key thing to knowing you’re in the will of God is knowing His voice and hearing it. If you don’t hear it, then you won’t know what He’s saying to you. It’s important to hear His voice and know what He is saying to you. If you don’t know His voice and don’t know what He is saying, it is time to spend more time with Him and get to know it.
A lot of people will say they’re in the will of God because they’re doing what the Bible says or because they know in their hearts – it feels right to them. But there is a surer way to know God’s will. You will actually hear His voice. He will actually tell you step by step what to do. If you know His voice you won’t have to worry about guessing whether you’re in His will or not. Remember God is not the author of confusion. {1 Corinthians 14:33} In my experience, He makes it clear. Likewise, if what you are hearing is in direct contradiction to what the Bible states or is something sinister or wicked, then obviously it is not God’s voice that you are hearing. Spend more time tuning in to the voice of the Lord and develop the spirit of discernment, so that you recognize the voice of God when you hear it.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. {Isaiah 30:21}
The way to knowing His voice is very simple – spend more time with Him. The more you spend time talking to Him the more you will hear His voice. The less you spend time with Him the less you will hear or know His voice. There is no short cut. God never changes. What He required for the disciples and His prophets back in the Bible is still the same in our present age today. We have to spend time talking to Him, seeking after Him. I know we like it fast and quick and automatic. We live in a day in age where fast cars, fast planes, fast information and fast services are the norm. But it’s not so with God. If you really want Him, He wants you to spend time knowing Him. There are no “hi-bye” relationships with the Lord. He likes a friendship that is deep and meaningful, something that takes time and grows sweeter and more precious as time goes by – weathered by the storms of life and faithful until the end. He likes to love through and through. He doesn’t want a superficial relationship. He hates those things. He hates shallow relationships. When God loves, He loves through and through. If you want Him and want to know His voice, you’ve got to spend time with Him – seeking after Him and knowing who He is. God tells us,
“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” {Jeremiah 29:13}
Jesus tells us in His word,
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” {Matthew 6:33}
He tells us,
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” {Luke 9:23}
If you really want to know if you’re in the will of God or if you’re walking in the path He desires for you to be in, then spend more time with Him. And when you thought you’ve spent enough time with Him, spend some more. I tell you, the reward of coming to know His voice and coming to see His face (once He reveals Himself to you because you have sought Him and waited for Him and wanted a deeper relationship with Him), it will knock you out of this world. There is nothing like it in this world. You go into a different plane higher than you have ever experienced before or known in this life. When you hear His voice you will know step-by-step you are in His will. There is no confusion. There is peace. He makes it clear. Whatever is in the way of your path and in His plans for you will have to step aside. Things work out like the Red Sea in Moses’ time being parted before your eyes. You will know. You will hear His voice and You will see His face. It is exactly what the scripture states in Isaiah,
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. {Isaiah 30:21}
God makes it clear. He will tell you what He wants you to do. When you’re in His will and you hear His voice, you know.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. {John 10:27-28}
But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. {Deuteronomy 4:29}
