Knowing Who God Is

Click here to listen

Knowing God is so very important in our communion with the Lord. If we hesitate to come to Him because we don’t really know who He is, then this is going to keep us from talking to Him. And talking to Him is one of the most important acts of loving God. We can’t possibly say we love Him and not talk to Him. That would be like telling your spouse or your friend you love them but you avoid talking to them. They will not believe you. So with the Lord, if we don’t spend time talking to Him He will know we don’t really love Him.

I know it’s not easy to talk to someone we cannot see or feel. But the scripture states that without faith it is impossible to please God. That if we will come to God at all, we must believe that He is God and that He rewards those that diligently seek Him. {Hebrews 11:6} If we’re going to come to the Lord at all, we need to come to Him with faith in our hearts, believing that He will reward us if we keep coming to Him and keep talking to Him. We have to believe that He is a great and big powerful God that can hear us. Not only hear us, but know our thoughts and feelings too as we are coming to Him and talking to Him. Also, since the Bible states He will reward those that keep seeking after Him and keep coming to Him, rest assured that one of these days He will begin to manifest Himself to you. He will come and will reveal Himself to you and make Himself known to you. In the meantime, we’ve got to start somewhere, and there is no more perfect time than right away. Even now!

In my previous blog post, “How To Love The Lord” and many others prior to this, I wrote about how to come to God and how to talk to Him. I write about coming to Him in so many ways because it’s so important to do this in order to have a relationship with God. If we don’t talk to Him we will never get to know Him. We could go to church all our lives and hear so many preachings and talks about Him, but unless we talk to God, we will never come to know Him for ourselves. It’s not enough to talk about God, we must talk to Him. There is no replacing a good chat with the Lord. Even when you feel like you’re the only one who can hear yourself talk, talk to Him anyway. Remember, it is important that we have faith in Him if we’re going to please Him. “The Just shall live by faith,” Habakkuk 2:4 states. That’s for you and me, if we want to be right and pleasing before God. It’s basically saying, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Another way to put it is what Apostle Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” So, it’s important in coming to the Lord to have faith that He hears us and understands us when we come to Him.

Knowing God starts with a talk with Him. The next thing when talking to God is knowing who He is. We cannot talk to the Lord freely if we’re confused about who Jesus is or if we’re not really sure if He is God at all. We have to have this settled. We have to believe that Jesus Christ who gave His life for us at the cross is God, the Father in heaven, who overshadowed the Virgin Mary to house Himself a body. There is only one God. If we believe that Jesus is God, then we have to believe that God the Father came down and robed Himself in the flesh of a man called Jesus. When we see Jesus we see God, the great Creator of heaven and Earth, and therefore, the Father. This is what He told one of his disciples Phillip,

“Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” {John 14:9}

If you struggle with this issue of the revelation of Jesus Christ as God make sure it’s one of the things you are talking to Him about. It is very important to know and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is God and that you don’t need to find the Father in order for you to please God. Finding Jesus Christ is finding the Father. Until that is settled in your heart you will have a tough time coming to Jesus Christ freely and openly. Please make sure you talk to the Lord about this. Jesus said in John 14:6,

“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Remember, God did not need a womb to create Adam or Eve. Mankind did not start with a womb. Mankind started with God forming the dust of the earth into a man and breathing life into it. Man was just plain-formed dirt until God breathed into it. Without God breathing into Adam, he would not have become a living soul. If God did not need to have a womb for Adam or Eve, neither did God need a womb to create Himself a body. But He did so because He chose that route to reveal Himself to us. Why? Because He loves us so much He wants us to feel that we are very special in His eyes and bring Himself down to our level, so that He will identify with us and we can identify with Him. So we cannot make excuses that He doesn’t understand us. We have no excuse not to talk to Him, because He has made Himself one of us.

On a side note, without God breathing life into our soul, we will not live a spiritual life either. We will just be flesh and carnal. We need to have Him breathe life into us through receiving His Holy Spirit. We need to make that our constant prayer to Him, that He will fill us with His Spirit and give us more and more of His Holy Spirit as the years go by.

As I have mentioned in my previous post, God is an emotional God. We forget so many times that Love is not totally rational. Love is called Love because of the emotions that love creates. Therefore, when we see and come to the God of Love, we must expect always to deal with a God who is emotional. This is why He chose Himself a womb, a woman’s body, to bring Himself forth. Through this route He is fulfilling His true love for us that we will be able to identify with. First, going through the process of coming to this world through a woman, humbling Himself for us. Then going through the process of being a child and into a man, except that He is truly God and He is truly a man at the same time. We have to believe that with Him all things are possible. {Matthew 19:26} Through this process He gave us His greatest expression of love, when He gave His life at the cross. Now, not only do we live in this body, but find forgiveness for our sins and life abundantly with Him. Through Jesus Christ we can find the way, the truth, and the life. Through Him we will live forever! Through Him we are more than conquerors because of His love for us. {Romans 8:37}

The Bible states that God did not keep a measure of His Spirit from Christ. He gave His full self to Jesus:

“For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” {John 3:34}

So it is important when we come to talk to the Lord, we know who we are talking to: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the living God, the only one who can save us.

We don’t need to go to the window and find the sky or the sun or the moon to talk to in order for us to feel God and believe that He can hear us. Talking to the sky, or to the clouds, or to the sun or to the moon can become a form of idolatry too, so be very careful. The heathen nation in the Old Testament did that. And believe me I understand completely that people do this. I used to. I sometimes still get tempted to say hello to the moon when I see it. Years ago I used to talk to God through it. But the Holy Spirit corrects me now every time I am tempted and reminds me He is living in my heart, I don’t need to turn to the sky or to the moon to feel like I’m getting connected to God. He is right here inside of me and He hears my thoughts, my feelings, and my emotions toward Him (or on anything for that matter) all the time. I am telling you He is so great. He just gets sweeter as the years go by. The more you talk to Him the more wonderful He gets.

Knowing who God is, is an important key element to having a great relationship with Him. We cannot be confused about Him. The sooner we have this cleared up the sooner we will come to know Him more and more. I know a lot of people struggle with this. I was one of them. But my constant talking to Jesus Christ brought me to having Him reveal Himself to me. The Lord Jesus Himself revealed His true identity to me. I didn’t even know this was important to Him until He corrected me one day. I was turning towards the window and finding the sky to talk to God, when He was right there in my room and I could feel Him and see Him in my spirit. He said to me as I turned away from Him worshiping God, “Why are you talking to me as if I was up there in the sky?”  I ended up having to confess that I really didn’t know who He is. I didn’t really believe that He was fully God. I thought He was more a man than God. The Lord turned to me and looked at me, I saw His face and He told me point blank, “But I am God.” When He said that it was like a light bulb turned on inside my soul and I knew, I knew, He is God. God touched my mind and I saw who He is. I learned from that moment that because He is God and that there is only one God, that Jesus indeed is the Father too.

Today, I can freely talk to Jesus, knowing that He is all God – the almighty God and the everlasting Father. As Isaiah beautifully stated in his writing,

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” {Isaiah 9:6}

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. {Revelation 19:10

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. {Colossians 2:9}

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. {John 8:58}

I and my Father are one. {John 10:30}

And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; {Revelation 2:8}

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. {Revelation 1:8}

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus, You are my God, who lives forever and ever. My hope and my help, my strength and the Rock of my salvation. I look to You Lord Jesus for everything. Without You Lord God, I am lost. I praise You.

I pray Lord Jesus, for Your continued grace and mercy and compassion upon my soul. Please Father, reveal Yourself to me. I pray for more of Your truth and revelation in my life. I am nothing Lord without You. Unless You reveal Yourself to me, I cannot know You. For the things of the flesh are an enemy to You. That’s why You came down and overcame the cross for my sake, so that I may be able to live in the Spirit. Please Lord Jesus, bless with more of You. I pray this Father, in Your most wonderful and lovely name, Jesus. Thank You, Father. Amen.
