So You Feel God is Mad at You…Now What?

Podcast

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. {John 3:17}

So you feel God is mad at you…now what? I’ve come to a point in my relationship with the Lord that when I start to feel this way I march right up to Him and ask, “Lord, are You mad at me?” I don’t beat around the bush anymore. I just go and ask Him flat out if He’s mad at me. Why worry about the answer when you can go right up to the source? There are times I would just feel this sense of condemnation in my heart without even knowing exactly what I’ve done wrong. Most of the time when this happens (nearly every time this happens), it’s usually Satan or an evil spirit that whispered it. So instead of cowering away from God and trying to run away from being open to Him, I run towards Him. Why? Because I have experienced time and time again that it’s not true. Yes, it’s true I’ve failed Him again and again, and it’s true I often feel that I have disappointed Him, and maybe even outright rebelled against Him. But when I come to Him and ask Him, “Lord are You mad at me?” I get, “No. I love you. I’m not mad at you. Come and talk to Me about it.”

The Bible states that God is a God of mercy, compassion, and slow to anger. The Psalmist states,

The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. {Psalm 145:8}

The Bible tells us that anger rests in the bosom of fools. {Ecclesiastes 7:9} We know God is not a fool. Anger is not in God’s heart, love is. And even if for argument sake, God has every right in His heart to be angry with you because of what you’ve done, don’t let that stop you from going to God. Think about the story of King David with Uriah the Hittite and his wife Bathsheba. Do you know how bad King David was at one time? He was so bad that you wonder how can God even continue to love him. It’s because David didn’t let what he did wrong stop him from going to God, and repenting and asking for His grace and mercy. That’s why God continued to love him. A humble heart and a humble spirit God will not turn away. The Bible tells us this,

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. {Psalm 51:17}

So even if you feel that God couldn’t possibly forgive you and is mad at you, go to Him about it anyway. Talk to Him and tell Him how you feel. Because by going to Him you are showing that you feel bad about what you’ve done wrong, and that your true desire is for Him to love you again and to feel His love again. Your true desire is to do what is good and right before Him. And if that is the case, then you’re in the right place. He is not angry with you. And of course, He has not stopped loving you. He knows our heart when we sin. He knows the outcome of that sin. He knows how terrible we will later feel about it, even if we sinned because we wanted to or because we found pleasure in it. That’s why it is important that we go to Him and talk to Him about it, because He knows what sin does to us and how powerful the temptations and snares of this world are. This is the reason why He came and died for our sins. because He wanted to deliver us from the power it has over us. God made a way out of our sins so we can be reconciled back to Him. It’s imperative that we run to Him no matter how bad we feel about ourselves, instead of running away from Him. Be courageous and be brave. There’s nothing to be afraid of. He’s not going to yell at you and bring down lightning from heaven. He is not like man that gets angry easily and holds grudges. Remember He’s God, and a God of love, not of anger. Instead of being angry, He will comfort you. If you are sorry and desire His love and favor in your life, this is the only way to gain it back again: by going to Him and talking to Him about it. He alone can bring us back to that wonderful relationship we desire with Him. We cannot do it. We have to go to Him for it.

Jesus alone can make the perfect judgment in our situation, how things truly stand, not us. Don’t jump to conclusions of how God must feel about you. Always talk to Him about it and find out for yourself. Satan, the Bible states, is the accuser of the brethren. He’s going around seeking and looking for someone he can devour and destroy. Don’t be a victim. His number one weapon against us is to doubt the love God has for us. As soon as he can have us doubting God’s love for us, well Satan has us in the palm of his hand. He can pretty much manipulate us. He can play with our minds and with our hearts and influence how we feel about God. That’s why it’s so important to go to the Lord all the time, directly to Him as soon as we have doubts in our minds about His love for us. I mean, all the time! Morning, noon, and night and every time in between. We can practice what Apostle Paul instructed the saints in Thessalonica: Pray without ceasing. {1 Thessalonians 5:17} It means, always have Jesus in your heart and in your mind, talking to Him, communing with Him and loving Him. This takes practice, but if you do it enough and make it a habit it will become easier. You share with Him your feelings, your heart, your praise, your thanksgiving, your anxieties, your every thought throughout the day; good and bad, it doesn’t matter. You can most certainly share with Him everything. And I mean, everything! It’s okay even if they’re not “spiritual”. When Jesus was here walking with His disciples, the disciples didn’t just talk to Him concerning eternal things. They also talked to Him about earthly things. They talked to Him about food, money, getting married, people, the weather, even about taxes. They talked to Him about a lot of things, even wanting to be a ruler with Him. That’s not so spiritual is it? It was a very earthly desire indeed. They wanted to rule over people and have power over them. Seriously, any subject you can think of you can talk to God about. If it concerns you, it concerns Him. You know why? Because He loves you so much, He gave His life for you so you can come boldly to Him. Can you imagine loving someone and they can only talk to you about certain things? Can you even stand to see someone you love shy away from certain topics with you, because they think you will get mad if you talk about it? Well, you might but God won’t. I guarantee it. If you truly love someone you will hear them out and find out what is eating them up. You will want to know what is in their heart. If we, who are limited in our capacity to love desires to be open with people we love, how much more God who is eternal in His love for us? How much more would He want us to reveal to Him everything that is in our hearts and is consuming us? How much more would He want to know what bothers us? Of course He does, because His love is great for us.

So next time you are feeling that God may be mad at you or probably has stopped loving you, don’t jump to conclusions that what you’re feeling is true. Go directly to Him and ask Him about it. I promise you He will not be mad at you. Actually, you will be surprised that instead of being mad at you He will be very pleased with you, because you took the courage to believe that He is a good and wonderful God instead of an angry God. He will be happy that you chose to believe in His love for you instead of Satan’s lie that He’s stopped loving you. God is not mad at you. He loves you. The Bible tells us that God’s thoughts concerning us are good, not evil. He desires to bring us to a wonderful future with Him, and a hope for a wonderful tomorrow. Someone who died for you wouldn’t die for you unless they loved you. You have to remind yourself that every single day, “Jesus died for me. He loves me.” Again and again repeat that to yourself. Let that be your mantra when you wake up in the morning and when you go through your day, and when you lie down to bed at night: Jesus died for me and He loves me. That is a simple truth but is ever so powerful. Once you believe that God loves you so much and has given His life for you to prove it, then the thought of Him being angry with you will not make you run away from Him. But rather it should make you want to run quickly towards Him instead, and talk to Him about it.

The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. {Jeremiah 31:3}

Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. {Psalm 25:6}

Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. {Isaiah 49:15}

When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. {Psalm 27:10}

Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD; Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me. {Psalm 40:11}

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. {Hebrews 13:8}

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank You Father that You love me. I thank You that You promised to never ever leave me nor forsake me. I thank You for Your grace and mercy and compassion upon my life everyday.

Father, I ask for Your forgiveness upon my sins today of assuming so many times that You are mad at me and don’t want me anymore. These thoughts that come upon me are not true. I must fight against them and resist them. Your word said that there’s no one righteous that sinneth not. Of course everyone comes short of Your glory. This is the reason You came and died for me, so that I can go to You easily and find forgiveness and grace and mercy upon my life. Forgive me Father and give me the courage always to come to You and bring myself to You, no matter how bad I feel about myself. Help me trust and believe with all of my heart in Your great love for me always. I pray this Father, in Your most wonderful and gracious name, Jesus. Thank You, Father. Amen.
