The Art Of Talking To God

Do you know that it takes being creative to talk to God? It takes an imagination. If you feel you don’t have much of it don’t worry, just ask Him to give you more and He will.

I think a lot of us suffer in our talks with God because we don’t come to Him with our imagination all fired up. What I mean by this is we don’t come to Him believing with all of our hearts that He’s there already, and He hears us and loves us so much. We come dreading prayer. We know we’re supposed to do it and we want to do it, but when we finally make time to do it we don’t know what to say. That’s because we’re not coming with our imagination. God so believed in the power of our imagination that He Himself had to come down one day and confound the language of the people in the time of the Tower of Babel because of their imagination. Here’s what the scripture states about it,

And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. {Genesis 11:6}

So you see, our imagination can be a very powerful tool in our lives to accomplishing great things if we would just use it. What better way to use it, than to use it to bring us closer to God?

When we come to prayer or take the time to talk to God we should by all means use our imagination. We should imagine Him to be there already waiting with anticipation for our arrival. You could imagine Him seated in a chair or in the couch in His Spirit, waiting. (I see the Lord in my mind all the time beside me in my daybed whenever I sing my songs to Him. I could see Him there and I could even many times feel Him too.) We should imagine Him looking forward to our time with Him. Remember, He knows everything so He knows that you’ve been contemplating to talk to Him and to make some time with Him. He’s not taken by surprise by your arrival. He is actually looking forward to this. Now you may wonder why He should look forward to your time with Him. Well, think about it. You are His child and He created you. He also gave His life for you because He loves you so much. Why shouldn’t He look forward to your coming to Him? He sure does. He has shown this to me time and time again in my prayers, and has even thanked me numerous times for taking the time to talk to Him. It’s like being a parent with your child. If your child tells you he wants to spend some time with you and wants to talk to you, wouldn’t you look forward to it too? Likewise, the Lord, our heavenly Father feels the same way. He looks forward to our talks with Him and actually hungers for our time with Him. He is always waiting for us because He loves us so much.

The next thing to imagine as I have already mentioned, is to believe that He loves us so much with all of His heart. Believe that He not only is looking forward to our coming to talk to Him, but that we make Him happy for making this decision. He knows we can do other things instead of talking to Him, so He truly appreciates it when we take the time to talk to Him. Knowing that He loves us so much, we should also realize that there is nothing we’ve done in the past or present that He will not forgive us for, if we talk to Him about it and ask for His grace and forgiveness. We should come with full confidence to His presence. He loves us so much that He will forgive us of anything if we are truly sorry, ask for his forgiveness, and repent. We have to imagine He loves us that much! That nothing, absolutely nothing we’ve done can get in the way of us being loved back by Him. Just imagine a humble Father, waiting and waiting for us to come by and talk to Him, and when we finally come by He is ever so happy we did. That should be the picture of Jesus in our minds at all times, waiting patiently for us to pause in our hustle and bustle of life to talk to Him.

Finally we should very much imagine that He knows everything about us already. We need to imagine that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that He doesn’t already know about us (and yet still loves us anyway). This is another reason why He loves us so much, because He knows everything about us from the moment we breathe our first breath in this life to the moment we take our last breath. He has known us and seen us all these years in all our ups and downs. Now don’t let this scare you. Let this thought encourage you with the fact that whatever you need to talk to the Lord about, He already knows and He already understands. This should encourage us to open up to Him since He already knows everything about us and understands where we are coming from. He knows what makes us the way we are. He knows how we think and process things and events in our life. He knows our likes and dislikes. He knows everything about us. But remember He loves us so much that He was willing to die for our sins to set us free and to save us. The Bible states that He came to give us life more abundantly. His sole desire is for us to talk to Him about everything and anything, so that He can work everything out in our lives and make us happier and more peaceful and end up loving Him more. There is nothing we ever need to be afraid of in coming to talk to the Lord. He loves us so much and wants ever so much for us to live a happy and abundant life with Him on this earth, and bring us to the place He’s preparing for us. It is only by talking to Him can we ever experience a life that is truly satisfying now and for eternity.

When I come to the Lord to talk to Him I know that whatever I talk to Him about He knows already. I can pinpoint it to Him in my imagination (using the scenes I can see in my mind), to tell Him what I’m feeling. For example if I’m talking to Him about what happened the night before during a party I was invited to, I assume with all my heart that He’s seeing the same vision I am seeing in my mind and knows also exactly what I am feeling. Because I have this faith in my heart so strongly, that He sees everything I see and knows everything I am feeling, I find it easier to talk to Him. I know He knows exactly where I am coming from. I bring Him into my heart and into my soul and into my imagination. I imagine His Spirit in my heart and in my soul and inside the very depths of my being, so that He becomes one with me and I with Him. There is really nothing then I need to hide from Him. Because of this I can freely talk to Him from my heart. This is what He looks for, us talking to Him with all of our hearts. I don’t hide anything from Him because I know it’s pointless. If I have a bad thought or bad imagination I just tell Him, “I’m sorry Lord, please forgive me and please help me stop and get rid of these thoughts. Thank You.” And He does. He never fails to help me get rid of my bad thoughts and bad imaginations. He is here to save me from my sins after all, not to condemn me. {John 3:17} This practice has helped me so much that I hardly have any nightmares anymore because even in my dreams He is there. When Satan or evil spirits come around to plague me with bad dreams I can quickly talk to God and cry out for His help and He saves me. Right out of my dreams the Lord has appeared to me and saved me.

Being able to talk to the Lord is such a wonderful privilege to have. He can bring such power inside our soul and being, that there is no darkness we can ever be experiencing that He cannot shine through. When we use our imagination for His glory and when we make it our hobby to talk to Him and come to Him all the time, watch out! You’re going to end up becoming one happy person, and a powerful one too to boot. Devils know they can’t mess around with you anymore because you’re not alone anymore. You’re tapping into the most powerful Being there is, and they know they have no chance against Him.

The art of talking to God is very simple: use your imagination and have faith in His love for you. Talk to Him with all of your heart and come with confidence. He is always there looking forward to our talks with Him and is patiently waiting for us.

For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul. {Jeremiah 31:25}

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. {Proverbs 20:27}

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. {Matthew 11:29}

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You with all of my heart for Your true love for us. You love us so much that You came and gave us Your body at the cross to become a sacrifice for our sins, so that we can be set free to live above our sinful nature and live a joyous life with You. I pray Lord Jesus for Your saints today to have faith in Your love for us, and to make it our habit to spend the time we need with You to know You more and to be made whole. Please Jesus, draw us and give us more faith in You. Help us also to not only imagine You in our lives, but believe with all of our hearts that You are ever present to hear us when we talk to You. I pray all these things, Father, in Your most powerful and blessed name, Jesus. Thank You, Father. Amen.
